How Many Free Zones Are There in the UAE? (2026)

The honest answer is “45+” — and the reasons counts differ are more useful than the number itself.

By ZoneWise Editorial TeamFees reviewed July 2026Updated

The short answer

Most 2026 guides say the UAE has “45+” free zones across its seven emirates; public lists count 46, or 47 after a recent Sharjah addition. We could not find one official figure everyone uses, because the count depends on how districts, sub-zones and operating status are treated.

Source typeFigure
Consultancy guides (2026)“45+” active free zones; Dubai “30+” (some say “40+”), Abu Dhabi “8+”, Sharjah “6”
Public encyclopedia list46 free zones, 47 with a recently established Sharjah zone

Why the numbers differ

  • Districts vs zones. Eight Dubai districts share one regulator (the DDA); some lists count each district, others count the regulator.
  • Sub-zones. Large zones such as KEZAD and RAKEZ contain several areas that some lists count separately.
  • Status. New zones are announced, some merge or rebrand, and inactive entries linger on older lists.
  • Type. Offshore registries (for example RAK ICC) and designated zones are sometimes included, sometimes not.
  • Dates. Figures change with new zones; older articles quote older totals.

A short history

The Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA), launched in 1985 beside Jebel Ali Port, is generally described as the UAE’s first free zone. Other emirates and sectors followed, from finance and media to logistics, healthcare and technology.

Does the exact number matter?

Not for choosing. Your shortlist is set by your activity, customers, visas and budget — a handful of zones, not forty. Start with the UAE free zones list, then use the comparison tool.

Sources and verification

Sources consulted for counts and lists: consultancy guides published 2026 (e.g., BCL, Avyanco), the public encyclopedia list “List of free-trade zones in the United Arab Emirates” (Wikipedia), the Dubai Development Authority’s description of its districts, and each zone’s own materials. Reviewed September 2026. Verify a specific zone on its official site and on the UAE Government portal.
